French Exchange 2019

On the morning of Saturday 15th June, more than 20 anxious MAGS students rolled up at Auckland International Airport to meet their French exchange students for the first time. Families got to know each other in the hour long wait for the kids to emerge with French teacher, Madame Olive. There was a flurry of excitement and a jumble of "will I recognise her?" and "is that them?!" as the wait grew longer and nerves escalated. Eventually a bunch of familiar faces rounded the corner, and students and their families awkwardly met their new house guests for the next five weeks. The French kids spent three weeks at school with their students, following them around classes and making new friends. They got the chance to practise their English skills and learn different subjects, even though in France it is the Summer holidays! After the three weeks of work, the real fun began! MAGS students took their kids on road trips throughout the country, visiting places such as Taupo, Rotorua, and Wellington. They also had fun days all together as a group, with a special trip to Rainbow’s End for one student’s birthday. The goodbye at the airport was very sad, especially after having bonded with another young person for five weeks. Many students, families, and teachers cried - a sign that the trip was a success and everybody enjoyed themselves. Now the MAGS kids look forward to reuniting with their French students when the roles are reversed and they travel to Paris, France in December this year. They leave on December the 6th, and return on January the 11th -  a 5 week long trip. Students will have two weeks in a French school, two weeks on holiday with their families over Christmas and New Year’s, and one week road-tripping with the Kiwi troop in the south of France. There is much to look forward to for our MAGS students, and as the end of the year draws nearer, excitement is beginning to kindle.

Thank you to Madame Selaries for doing a wonderful job of co-ordinating the whole exchange with Madame Olive. It was a success!
