Black Panther Tickets

This year the some of MAGS Media Studies Students are taking a trip to LA - and to fundraiser for this they are selling tickets to go see Black Panther, MARVEL Studios newest film at 6pm on Wednesday the 28th. Here's a quick review (+trailer) to try and pipe your interest. The Tickets are available to buy at the school finance office.

The film is new ground for MARVEL Studios, from Director Ryan Coogler (Creed, Fruitvale Station), set in the African Country of Wakanda and starring Chadwick Boseman as the country's King/Protector T'Challa (also the titular character of the film) who has to combat an outsider (Micheal B. Jordan) who threatens Wakanda and the wider world.

This film is a stand-out in the studio's 18-strong line-up which has ranged from, at the very worst, descent (Thor: The Dark World) to great (Spider-Man: Homecoming). The cast especially shines, though this has never been an area for MARVEL to fault in, with Micheal B. Jordan being the stand-out as the villain, Killmonger, to my personal favorite Shuri, played by Letitai Wright, T'Challa's sister and his resident 'Q'. The rest of the great cast manage to make every character they play feel fleshed out, no matter the screentime, Lupita Nyong'o (Star Wars), Danai Gurira (Walking Dead), Angela Bassett (American Horror Story), Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out), Forest Whitaker, Winston Duke, Andy Serkis and Martin Freeman.

The story is engaging and explores interesting themes of colonialism and reckoning with the past. The score is truly adds to the film, using a mix of local African musicians in Senegal and South Africa, and combining African music with a traditional western-classic orchestra. And, because it is an superhero movie, it does feature action sequences which are all pretty exciting. The film is visually beautiful - colorful and the city of Wakanda is wonderfully designed - it feels real and the world-building does not bog-down the film like it could.

Even if you don't generally like MARVEL films this is a film to check out. So go buy a ticket from the fiance office to see it and support some of your fellow MAGS students.
