Going behind the scenes with Mr Murdoch

On the 8th of march, myself, Jessika and Grace, went behind the scenes and met with one of our new deputy principals Mr Murdoch to learn a bit about him. We asked him a few questions and were surprised about some of the answers, Enjoy.

Mr Murdoch speaks highly of the important quality of leadership, he himself loves being a leader. When asked what he likes most about being a leader he says he loves the moments of connection he gets to experience through this. He talks of the moments you are talking with someone and you realise that being been on journey with them, you have shared knowledge and together you have really connected over an incredible experience.

When we asked mr Murdoch about what he can bring to the school, he told us that  he believes that he can bring lots of enthusiasm to our school as it is one of his biggest values. He also hopes that he can help develop our school traditions in any way as he thinks that MAGS is already such a great place.

Next, we asked Mr Murdoch about his previous positions, he told us that he has gone from being an English teacher at his previous school McLeans college to now, being a deputy principal here at Mount Albert Grammar. This change in role excites him but feels as if he is at the bottom of a very steep cliff. He is looking forward to building relationships with the students and teachers and gaining their trust. This change of role is also a huge step up from his previous positions as he has only ever been a teacher at McLeans College and taught in England for 6 years. In his previous positions he has taught english and a little bit of history, saying that english has always been the subject he most enjoyed teaching.
Mr Murdoch also told us that he has learnt two crucial lessons from his time in high school. He told us that the first one is that you should always remember the people. Value the people around you, especially the friends. The second lesson was to always front up for your mistakes. Be honest for them and own up to them.

When we asked Mr Murdoch about what excites him the most about the future, he straight away told us that he think one of the most exciting things about the future is the fact that its is completely unknown. Mr Murdoch also said that he thinks that the current generation is very exciting. Following this up, he told us that this is because he believes that this generation think very differently, saying that although we do not have to rebel very much, he still sees a strong moral streak in the us. He told us that wherever the younger generation goes, The ‘me too’ movement being an example of that, there are norms being challenged in a very different way to the past and he thinks that that, is very exciting.

When asked about some of his greatest achievements, Mr Murdoch told us about his trip on his own to India, where he found himself in new exciting and frightening world. While in India he became sick and with very few other English speakers he faced many challenges. Mr Murdoch found success in overcoming these challenges and reliefs in that great feeling that comes from that. He then went on to get a moustache, almost had an India accent and experience the amazing aspects the culture had to offer.

Next we asked him some more personal questions, and found out that he is a huge sports fan and has played many many sports such as rugby. We also learnt that his favourite food is curry and that he can't go a week without it. We also found out that he prefers book over films, and loves watching Sci-fi movies. Lastly, we found out that he has two children, Bruno and Jack and a wife who he has known since high school. Lastly, when asked if there was something that people would not expect about him, he told us that he didn't have the top of his middle finger, due to an unfortunate fishing accident.

After that, we asked him a very important question, was he or has he ever been in the CIA? Jokingly, he told us it was an absolute fabrication and that he wasn’t ‘swave’ or cool enough to pull it off. He does have the glasses and the suit must I add.
